VICS - WEDNESDAY, 26 JUNE 2024 - THE PHILOSOPHY OF INTELLIGENCE
Ladies and gentlemen,
Another VICS will be convened on Wednesday, 26 June, at 7:00 p.m. (Eastern) via Zoom, to discuss the philosophy of intelligence.
The general argument is that there have been three discrete and separate paradigms of intelligence studies: 1) human biological intelligence; 2) national security/military intelligence (somewhat branching out into law enforcement intelligence and corporate competitive intelligence); and 3) AI/ML/DL. Human biological intelligence and AI/ML/DL studies have been somewhat integrated, but the national security/military intelligence paradigm as remained relatively aloof. Or has it? Can all paradigms be integrated into one philosophy of intelligence?
Another general idea is that intelligence education, in its broadest sense, should recognize the full range of intellectual curiosity applicable to the intelligence function, as other established fields of study have done. Accordingly, there is a fundamental requirement to identify and define the nature of philosophical thinking about intelligence as a general phenomenon, in a manner that comfortably encompasses all manifestations of intelligence. The thought here is that we must understand the scope of philosophical thinking about intelligence, if we hope to eventually describe a workable theory of intelligence, one that is based on a credible, generally agreed definition of intelligence. Doctrines, practices, and effects can then follow logically.
This VICS will simply seek and welcome your ideas about what you think are the highest aspects, demands, ideas, or requirements of philosophical thinking about intelligence. This topic may not appeal to all, but it will hopefully be of refreshing interest to some.
Attached here are two papers that provide some background reading on the subject. Closer to the date, along with the Zoom link, I will provide about three general questions to guide, not constrain, discussion. In the meantime, I welcome any comments or suggestions.
Best regards,
Jim
